What to Do When Uninstall is Greyed Out

Pre-installed system apps (from Google or your phone manufacturer) cannot be uninstalled β€” the button is greyed out or absent. You can disable them instead: Settings β†’ Apps β†’ tap the app β†’ Disable. A disabled app disappears from your app list and does not run, but remains on the device. This is the closest option to uninstalling a system app without rooting your phone.

Uninstall multiple apps at onceIn the Google Play Store β†’ tap your profile icon β†’ Manage apps and device β†’ Manage tab β†’ tap the checkboxes next to apps you want to remove β†’ tap the bin icon. Faster than removing apps one by one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Data stored locally on your phone (within the app's storage) is deleted when you uninstall. Data stored in the cloud or linked to your account (Gmail messages, WhatsApp backups on Google Drive, game progress synced to Google Play Games) is retained and will restore when you reinstall the app and log in.
Settings β†’ Apps β†’ select the app β†’ Force Stop to stop it immediately. To prevent it starting again: disable Background App Refresh for that app, or if it is a system app, use Disable as above. For non-system apps you do not want to use, uninstalling is simpler than managing background permissions.
