Why Descale Your Nespresso?

Limescale builds up inside the machine from minerals in water, reducing temperature and pressure, slowing extraction and affecting taste. Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or after 300 capsules, whichever comes first. Most machines have a descaling alert light.

What You Need

  • Nespresso descaling kit (available from Nespresso, supermarkets and online) OR 1 sachet citric acid dissolved in 1 litre water
  • A container to catch water (at least 1 litre capacity)

Entering Descaling Mode

Each Nespresso model enters descaling mode differently. Common methods:

  • Essenza Mini: Turn off. Hold the button for 3 seconds to enter special functions. Then press the button 3 times within 2 seconds.
  • Vertuo Next / Plus: Turn off. Press the button 3 times quickly. The button blinks orange.
  • Citiz: Hold both buttons for 3 seconds until they blink rapidly.
  • Pixie: Press both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.

Check the manual for your specific model — search your model name + "descaling mode" if unsure.

The Descaling Process

  1. 1

    Prepare the machine

Empty and remove the capsule container and drip tray. Remove any capsule in the machine. Fill the water tank with the descaling solution (kit solution or citric acid mixture).

  2. 2

Place a large container under the outlet

Position a container of at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet and drip tray outlet to catch all the descaling water.

  3. 3

Start descaling mode and let it run

Once in descaling mode (lights blinking), press the button to begin. The machine runs the solution through in a slow cycle with pauses — this takes approximately 20 minutes. Do not interrupt it.

  4. 4

    Rinse cycle — twice

When the descaling cycle completes, the machine prompts for rinsing. Empty the container, refill the water tank with fresh clean water, replace the container, and run the rinse cycle. Repeat with fresh water a second time to ensure all descaling solution is flushed out.

  5. 5

    Exit descaling mode

Most machines exit descaling mode automatically after the rinse cycle. If not, hold the button for 3 seconds to return to normal mode. The descaling alert light should turn off.

After descalingRun one or two capsules of hot water through before making your first coffee — this ensures any residual solution taste is fully cleared. Your machine should now run noticeably quieter and faster with better water temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nespresso officially recommends against vinegar — the acetic acid can damage internal seals and components over time, and the smell can linger and affect coffee flavour. Citric acid (available cheaply from pharmacies and online) is a safer and equally effective alternative to the branded descaler. Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons in 1 litre of water.
Every 3 months or after 300 capsules, whichever comes first. In hard water areas, descale more frequently (every 6–8 weeks). The machine's descaling alert light is a reliable indicator — do not ignore it for too long as excessive scale buildup can permanently damage the heating element.
