Why Descale Regularly?

Mineral deposits (limescale) from water accumulate inside espresso machines over time β€” in the boiler, pipes, brew head and steam wand. Scale reduces heating efficiency, slows extraction, affects coffee flavour and eventually damages the machine. Most manufacturers recommend descaling every 2–3 months, or when the descale light activates.

What You Need

  • Descaling solution (brand-specific like Breville/Sage Descaler, DeLonghi EcoDecalk, or a universal descaler)
  • Or: 1 tablespoon citric acid dissolved in 1 litre of water (cheaper alternative)
  • Water for rinsing
  • Large container or jug to catch water

Method: With a Descale Cycle (Most Modern Machines)

  1. 1

    Prepare the descaling solution

Mix the descaling solution with water as directed on the packaging β€” typically one sachet or 50–100ml of solution in 1 litre of water. Pour into the water tank.

  2. 2

    Start descale mode

Most machines have a dedicated descale mode β€” check your manual. For Breville/Sage machines: press and hold the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons simultaneously. For DeLonghi: varies by model, usually holding a combination of buttons. The machine enters a slow cycle that runs the solution through all internal components.

  3. 3

Place a large jug under the group head and steam wand

The machine will dispense the descaling solution through both the coffee group head and steam wand during the cycle. Have a container large enough to catch everything.

  4. 4

Run two full tanks of fresh water through

Once the descale cycle completes, run at least two full tanks of fresh clean water through the machine β€” through the group head and steam wand. This flushes all descaling solution residue. Descaling solution in your coffee tastes terrible and can be harmful.

Manual Descaling (Machines Without Descale Mode)

Fill the tank with descaling solution. Run small amounts through the group head (as if brewing without coffee β€” empty portafilter). Pause for 30 seconds between runs to let the solution work. Also run through the steam wand. Continue until the tank is empty. Rinse with two full tanks of fresh water.

Using filtered water reduces how often you need to descaleA simple Brita filter or water filter jug significantly reduces mineral content in water, dramatically reducing scale buildup. In very hard water areas, this can reduce descaling frequency from every 6 weeks to every 4–6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vinegar works but has drawbacks: the strong smell can linger in the machine and affect coffee flavour even after rinsing, and it can damage some rubber seals and metal components over time. Citric acid (available cheaply online or from health food stores) is a much better DIY alternative β€” effective, odourless and gentler on machine components.
Every 2–3 months with regular daily use in a hard water area. Every 4–6 months in soft water areas or with filtered water. Many machines have a descale indicator light β€” follow its recommendation. Signs you need to descale before the light: slower extraction than usual, coffee temperature lower than normal, reduced steam pressure.
