What You Need for a First Passport
- Completed passport application form (available online or at post offices)
- Proof of citizenship β birth certificate or citizenship certificate
- Proof of identity β driver's licence or another government-issued ID
- Two recent passport photos (meet strict size and background requirements)
- Application fee (varies by country β see below)
Step-by-Step Application Process
- 1
Download and complete the application form
In Australia: download from passports.gov.au. In the US: form DS-11 from travel.state.gov. In the UK: apply online at gov.uk/apply-first-adult-passport.
- 2
Get passport photos taken
Most post offices, chemists and photo shops offer passport photos. Requirements are strict β plain white or off-white background, neutral expression, no glasses. Photos taken on your phone often get rejected.
- 3
Gather your documents
Collect originals (not photocopies) of all required documents. If any documents are not in English, you will need a certified translation.
- 4
Get a guarantor to sign (if required)
Many countries require a guarantor β someone who has known you for 2+ years in a professional capacity β to verify your identity and sign the photos.
- 5
Submit in person
First-time passport applications usually cannot be mailed β you must appear in person at a post office, passport office or acceptance facility.
- 6
Pay the fee and keep your receipt
Fees vary: Australia approx $340, US approx $165, UK approx Β£100. Keep your receipt number to track your application.
Renewing an Expired Passport
Renewal is usually simpler than a first application β you mail or submit your old passport, a new form and new photos. In many countries renewal can be done entirely by mail. Check your country's official passport website for the exact process.
