What Causes Grainy Photos?

Grain (digital noise) appears in photos taken in low light when the camera uses a high ISO setting to compensate for the lack of light. The higher the ISO, the more noise amplification β€” and the grainier the result. It is especially noticeable on phone cameras in dark restaurants, concerts or night scenes.

Fix Grainy Photos on iPhone

  1. 1

Open the photo in Photos β†’ tap Edit

Open the photo, tap Edit in the top right corner.

  2. 2

Tap the three dots β†’ find Noise Reduction

Scroll through the adjustment options. Look for a Noise Reduction control β€” it may be under the Detail or Sharpness sections depending on your iOS version. Drag the slider to reduce noise. Be careful not to overdo it β€” too much noise reduction removes fine detail and makes photos look smeared or plastic.

Fix Grainy Photos in Lightroom Mobile (Free)

  1. 3

Import the photo into Lightroom Mobile

Download Adobe Lightroom free from the App Store or Play Store. Import your grainy photo.

  2. 4

    Detail panel β†’ Noise Reduction

In the editing panel, scroll to Detail. Under Noise Reduction, drag the Luminance slider β€” this reduces luminance noise (the most visible grey/white grain). Start around 30–50. For colour noise (coloured speckles), increase the Color slider. Zoom to 100% to assess the result accurately.

Preventing grain at the sourceUse more light β€” even turning on a room light dramatically reduces noise. Tap the subject in your phone camera app to lock focus and exposure there (phones sometimes underexpose the subject to keep highlights bright, which causes shadows to be noisy when brightened in editing). Night Mode on modern iPhones and Pixel phones significantly reduces grain in dark conditions automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern AI noise reduction tools can remove the vast majority of grain, but aggressive noise reduction always results in some loss of fine detail β€” textures, hair and fabric can look smooth and slightly unnatural. The goal is a good balance: reduce noise enough that it is not distracting while preserving enough detail that the photo looks real and sharp.
Grain in daylight photos usually indicates the camera is underexposing or using a higher ISO than necessary. Check if your camera lens is dirty (wipe with a clean cloth). Also check if you are using digital zoom β€” digitally zoomed photos are significantly more noisy than photos taken at the widest focal length. Move closer to your subject instead of zooming in.
