What Causes Grainy Photos?
Grain (digital noise) appears in photos taken in low light when the camera uses a high ISO setting to compensate for the lack of light. The higher the ISO, the more noise amplification β and the grainier the result. It is especially noticeable on phone cameras in dark restaurants, concerts or night scenes.
Fix Grainy Photos on iPhone
- 1
Open the photo in Photos β tap Edit
Open the photo, tap Edit in the top right corner.
- 2
Tap the three dots β find Noise Reduction
Scroll through the adjustment options. Look for a Noise Reduction control β it may be under the Detail or Sharpness sections depending on your iOS version. Drag the slider to reduce noise. Be careful not to overdo it β too much noise reduction removes fine detail and makes photos look smeared or plastic.
