Export Bookmarks from Chrome

  1. 1

    Open Bookmark Manager

Click the three dots menu in the top right of Chrome β†’ Bookmarks β†’ Bookmark manager. Or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows) / Cmd+Shift+O (Mac).

  2. 2

Click the three dots in Bookmark Manager

In the Bookmark Manager window, click the three dots icon near the top right (not the main Chrome menu β€” this is a separate set of dots within the Bookmark Manager itself).

  3. 3

    Click Export bookmarks

Select Export bookmarks from the dropdown. Choose where to save the file. Chrome exports all your bookmarks as a single HTML file.

Import Bookmarks into Another Browser

  • Firefox: Library button β†’ Bookmarks β†’ Manage Bookmarks β†’ Import and Backup β†’ Import Bookmarks from HTML
  • Safari: File β†’ Import From β†’ Bookmarks HTML File
  • Edge: Settings β†’ Favorites β†’ Import favorites β†’ Import from other browsers or choose file
  • Another Chrome instance: Chrome menu β†’ Bookmarks β†’ Bookmark manager β†’ three dots β†’ Import bookmarks β†’ select your HTML file
Easier alternative: Chrome syncIf you are moving to another Chrome browser (on a new computer for example), simply sign into Chrome with the same Google account. All bookmarks, history and passwords sync automatically β€” no export needed.

Back Up Bookmarks Regularly

Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file and saving it to cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox) is a good habit. Chrome sync is convenient but if your Google account is ever compromised or you switch away from Chrome, having a local export is a useful safety net.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chrome asks you where to save the file β€” you choose the location. By default it may suggest your Downloads folder. The exported file is named bookmarks_[date].html. It is a standard HTML file that can be opened in any browser or text editor.
If you are signed in to Chrome with a Google account, your bookmarks should restore from sync. Sign out and sign back in to force a sync. If you were not signed in, check if Chrome has a bookmark backup: go to the Chrome user data folder and look for a file called Bookmarks.bak β€” copying it and renaming to Bookmarks can restore them.
