What You Need

  • A clean microfibre cloth (the most important tool β€” nothing else is safe)
  • Distilled water (for stubborn smudges)
  • That is all β€” no cleaning sprays, no paper towels, no window cleaner
Never use these on a laptop screenPaper towels, tissues or regular cloths (they scratch). Window cleaner or glass cleaner (contains ammonia which destroys anti-glare coatings). Alcohol above 70% concentration. Any spray applied directly to the screen. Excessive pressure.
  1. 1

Power off and unplug the laptop

Turn the laptop off completely and unplug it. A dark screen makes smudges and dust far easier to see. It also prevents any liquid getting into an active display circuit.

  2. 2

Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth first

Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth and wipe gently across the screen using light circular motions. This removes dust and loose particles without scratching. For most light dust and fingerprints, this is all you need.

  3. 3

For stubborn smudges β€” dampen the cloth slightly

If dry wiping does not remove all smudges, lightly dampen one corner of the microfibre cloth with distilled water (tap water leaves mineral deposits). Wring the cloth so it is barely damp β€” never wet. Wipe gently over the smudge.

  4. 4

Follow with the dry side of the cloth

Immediately wipe with the dry side of the cloth to remove any moisture. Never let water sit on the screen or run into the bezel.

  5. 5

Let it dry before closing the lid

Leave the laptop open for a minute before closing to ensure no moisture is trapped between the screen and keyboard.

Screen cleaning spraysIf you want to use a dedicated screen cleaner, choose one specifically labelled safe for LCD/LED screens β€” these are alcohol-free and pH neutral. Spray onto the cloth first, never directly onto the screen. Brands like WHOOSH! and Klear Screen are widely recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the concentration and screen type. Apple explicitly says not to use alcohol on MacBook screens due to their anti-reflective coating. For most other laptops, a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe used very sparingly is generally safe on the glass areas but avoid the plastic bezel. When in doubt, use distilled water only.
Usually caused by using a cloth that is not genuinely clean β€” a microfibre cloth that has been used on other surfaces picks up oils and redistributes them. Wash your microfibre cloth regularly in warm water without fabric softener. Also make sure you are not pressing too hard, which spreads the smudge rather than lifting it.
