The 30-Second Self-Cleaning Method

  1. 1

Add warm water and dish soap immediately after use

Do this straight after blending — before residue dries and sticks. Half-fill the blender jug with warm water. Add one drop of dish soap. Do not overfill.

  2. 2

Blend on high for 30–60 seconds

Put the lid on firmly. Blend on high speed for 30–60 seconds. The soapy water reaches every surface including under the blade assembly where residue hides. The agitation and soap combination cleans thoroughly.

  3. 3

    Rinse and air dry

Pour out the soapy water. Rinse with clean water (blend briefly again with clean water if needed). Invert the jug on a drying rack to air dry. That is all — 90 seconds total.

Deep Clean (Monthly or After Sticky Residue)

  1. 4

    Disassemble and hand wash components

Remove the blade assembly from the jug (it usually unscrews from the bottom). Hand wash the blade unit, rubber gasket/seal, and jug separately with warm soapy water and a bottle brush. Be very careful with the blades — they are razor sharp. Clean the outside of the motor base with a damp cloth. Do not submerge the motor base.

Removing Stubborn Stains

For staining from berries or turmeric: blend a mixture of warm water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar or bicarbonate of soda. Let sit 5 minutes, then blend again and rinse. Sunlight also fades staining on plastic jugs — leave the clean jug in direct sunlight for a few hours.

Dishwasher safetyMost blender jugs are dishwasher safe on the top rack. The blade assembly is usually NOT dishwasher safe — the harsh detergents and heat can dull blades and deteriorate rubber seals over time. Check your blender’s manual. Hand washing the blade assembly extends its sharpness and the seal’s lifespan significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blend a mixture of warm water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and the juice of half a lemon on high for 60 seconds. Rinse thoroughly. The vinegar kills odour-causing bacteria and the lemon freshens the plastic. For persistent smells: disassemble and check the rubber gasket/seal at the base of the jug — food residue trapped under the seal is a common odour source. Remove, scrub, and replace the gasket.
No — blending hot liquids is dangerous. Steam from hot liquid expands rapidly inside the sealed blender and can blow the lid off explosively. Always let soups, sauces and other liquids cool to below 60°C before blending. When blending warm (not hot) liquids: fill the jug no more than half full, hold a folded cloth firmly on the lid, and start on low speed before increasing. Alternatively use an immersion (stick) blender directly in the pot for hot soups.
